The mission of the Adolescent (12 beds) and Adult (26 beds) Psychiatric Units is to provide the patient with brief but comprehensive inpatient psychiatric care in an effort to minimize the individuals risk of danger to self or others and to discharge them to an appropriate level of care that supports their continued treatment needs. Discharges, whenever clinically indicated and possible, are made back to the community/family from which they came. The length of stay will be individualized for the stabilization of each patient. The treating approach is intended to be holistic in nature addressing medical, emotional, psychological, and social needs. In addition, schooling is provided on the Adolescent Unit to meet the academic needs of the adolescent patient. Each unit is locked and closely supervised to assure the safety of each patient.

Confidentiality
In line with St. James Mercy’s core value of "Reverence For Each Person" confidentiality is one of our highest priorities as well as a legal responsibility.
Admission Criteria
Individuals, both adults and adolescents, must be at risk of danger to self or others in order to qualify for admission.
Discharge Criteria
Lengths of stay are short and usually in terms of days rather than weeks. Once an individual is no longer deemed to be clinically at risk of danger to self or others they no longer meet inpatient criteria and must be discharged to a lower, less restrictive level of care.
Hours of Operation
Each unit is in operation twenty fours hours a day seven days a week.
Accessing Services & Contact
Services to these units can be accessed through St. James Mercy’s or another hospital Emergency Room. To contact St. James Mercy Hospital call (607) 324-8000.
