  Sleep Disorders Lab
St. James Mercy Hospital

What is the Sleep Disorders Lab?
The St. James Mercy Sleep Disorder Lab is a satellite facility affiliated with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Affiliation provides the southern tier with a broad range of services including evaluation and therapy for sleep apnea and other dysfunctions which may interrupt the sleep cycle thereby affecting daily activity.

As one of the only accredited Sleep Labs in the region, St. James Mercy is fully equipped to diagnose and treat many types of sleep disorders by board certified Sleep Physicians, Pulmonologist, and Registered Polysomnographers. Our new hotel-like rooms are furnished with a Sleep Number bed, oversized recliner, flat screen TV, to make patients feel at home. We even serve a continental breakfast.

What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is the cessation of breathing. Unrecognized episodes of apnea can occur hundreds of times during a single night. The person arouses enough to re-initiate breathing but not sufficiently to cause awareness. This interruption to a persons’ sleep and the reduction in oxygen in their blood stream can have a serious impact on their quality of life and their health.

What are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?
If you or your sleep partner have any of the following symptoms, an evaluation is recommended

  • Loud, intermittent snoring
  • Notable periods of silence
  • Severe daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headache
  • Loss of libido
  • Memory deficit
  • Depression
  • Intellectual deterioration

What are the Dangers of Ignoring Sleep Apnea?

  • Falling asleep while driving
  • Falling asleep while operating heavy equipment
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke

Program Components

  • Evaluation for sleep disorders study.
  • Verification of sleep disorder via monitoring during an overnight stay in a "home setting" at St. James Mercy Hospital.
  • Identification of treatment therapies appropriate to the individual.

Does Health Insurance Pay for this Service?
Many insurance policies do cover part, or all, of a sleep study. A pre-approval is done to determine what coverage is available.
